Idioms and Phrases selected for competitive exam Group C

1.To play ducks and darkes (अपना धन बर्बाद करनाTo waste money)
There are so many ducks in a pond.You wish to go for a bath and started bathing.What you see? all the ducks are getting darker with anger,seeing you that you have occupied.Ducks come near of your cloths and ruined money of your wallet with their peak, that you have kept in the pocket of your pant.
2.Bolt from the blue (अचानक आया हुआ संकटA sudden calamity)
Bolt means current or sudden any peril.Generally water have no colour but we all mostly assume it as blue. There is a bolt and calamity come from current when you go to bath and
someone interrupted you.So you know that if you go for bath in blue water then any sudden calamity can come.
3.At an arm’s length (खतरेTo keep dangered or evil at a distance)
Your hand can slap and its a danger. So.So, Distance is made by god from face to hand. (Length between arms and palms).To keep danger or evil at a distance.
4.Over head and ears (सामर्थ्य से बाहरBeyond one’s capacity)
Suppose you want to know your weight.You have been put into a balancing machine and something on the another side of it.Now you seeing that other side balancing machine length reach over your ears and heads and they have not such capacity.It means you are beyond of capacity.
5.To add insult to injury (जले पर नमक छिड्कनाTo harm as well as humiliate)
Its quite easy to understand so I hope there should not be any assumption to understand it deeply.
6.A double-edge sword (ऐसा कार्य जो दुसरो को और स्वंय को भी नुकसान पहुंचा सकेCapable of causing harm to the other as to one’s ownself)
Suppose you have a sharp sword (Front and back). So, what can happen if you want to harm someone from the opposite side of the sword then the other edge side of sharp sword harm you too.So,Here it means harming others including you.
7.To make both ends meet (मुश्किल से गुजर-बसरTo live within one’s income)
Its quite difficult to meet the both ends.Suppose you and your family living in a rent. .Now its quite difficult to make both ends meet,because you will have to pay to land lord and family.It mean both of the members (landlord and your family) depends only on your income i.e. to live within one’s income.
8.An axe to grind (अपनी स्वार्थ सिद्धिSome personal motive)
Suppose you have gone to a forest and started cutting tree with your axe for you own moto.Your scope here is only to sell the wood of the tree to make money.But you forgot about the life of the tree that is giving fresh air,pollution free atmosphere,oxygen and so on to the people.So, its just only your moto an axe to grind the tree.
9.To cut a sorry figure (च्छा प्रभाव डालनाTo make a poor impression)
Suppose it have been said to draw a figure of a upset lady.Instead of that you have drawn happy background or some colourful background  that  makes the upset lady odd.Now, you want to isolate the lady removing background.When it is said to you to show your drawing it makes a poor impress because it was a cut picture of the upset lady.It make a poor impression to the judges.If you show full chart (like others candidates) with background then it could be happy figure.
10.A close shave (बाल-बाल बचनाA narrow escape)
Suppose you started shaving.Suddenly you hear the sound of a blast.Then the machine dropped from your hand.So, automatic dropped shaving machine dropped hearing noice and you just saved yourself by the help of the shaving machine.
